What’s the Story?

Laura is a young woman traveling to her new home for the first time. She is moving in with her first real love and dreaming of marriage, children, maybe a nice house out of the city. She says goodbye to her family, she packs her worldly possessions into two suitcases and leaves her parents house to get the taxi to her new home.

But taxis are not as safe a mode of transportation as you might think. Laura is led on a journey that she not only doesn’t like, but that she didn’t ask for. This is the type of fear which multiple women experience every day, across the world.

This story was supposed to exemplify how an average situation can quickly turn dangerous. There are those among us who are primarily (but not always) men who never have to think about what they wear to make sure they are dressed safely. They don’t have any other thoughts when walking down the street other than that they want to walk down the street.

Men don’t tend to understand how unsafe women feel because they don’t have to think about these things. The truth is that in any given space where women are in attendance, at least one of them is thinking about her safety.

The Script: When the Meter’s Not Running

The script version of the short story required a tricky rearrangement of characters within the short story. There is a great wee twist in A Taxi Home and I didn’t want to lose that due to the exposition differences between stories and films.

The script was written during my time at University and as one of the final pieces I turned in. Doing the script itself wasn’t enough. They wanted me to plan out the short film and then direct it, too.

Let’s be clear: 38 of the 40 other classmates I had did a monologue. Singular. I made a whole damned film. That’s what you get when you against the grain.

Anyway… I scripted it, the actors were my friends and family. It’s on YouTube somewhere.

I cordially invite you to entertain a ten minute short script/story combo. Read it for leisure or to the classroom. I am just happy that it is no longer uselessly taking up space on my hard drive.
